Yakitori restaurants in Hong Kong range from intimate, chef-driven omakase counters to casual izakayas, with quality varying based on chicken sourcing, grilling technique, and experience. Below is a ranked list of 5 standout spots, prioritized by ingredient quality, craftsmanship, and overall value: 1. **Yardbird** The iconic Sheung Wan spot founded by chef Matt Abergel is widely regarded as Hong Kong’s gold standard for modern yakitori. It sources premium heritage chicken (including rare Japanese breeds) and uses binchotan charcoal for a deep, smoky char. The menu features creative but respectful takes on classic cuts (try the chicken oyster with yuzu kosho and the crispy chicken skin), plus standout sides like truffle onigiri. The lively, casual vibe and thoughtful drink list (including natural sake and craft cocktails) make it a perennial favorite, though reservations are essential. 2. **Torishiki** A Michelin-recommended omakase yakitori counter in Central, Torishiki focuses on ultra-traditional kaiseki-style yakitori. Chef Masashi Sato uses free-range Japanese chicken and precise grilling techniques to highlight each cut, from delicate thigh to rich liver, with minimal seasoning to let the chicken’s flavor shine. The 15+ course omakase includes seasonal small dishes and perfectly grilled skewers, served in an intimate 10-seat counter setting. It’s ideal for diners seeking a refined, authentic Japanese yakitori experience. 3. **Kushikatsu Tanaka** While best known for kushikatsu (breaded fried skewers), this Tokyo import in Causeway Bay also serves exceptional yakitori that rivals dedicated spots. The chicken is sourced from local organic farms and grilled over binchotan, with a focus on crispy skin and juicy meat. The casual, lively izakaya atmosphere is great for groups, and the affordable set menus (which mix yakitori and kushikatsu) offer excellent value. Don’t miss the chicken meatball skewer with raw egg dip. 4. **Yakitori Imai** A hidden gem in Tsim Sha Tsui, Yakitori Imai is a small, family-run spot that feels like a neighborhood izakaya in Tokyo. The chef uses Japanese chicken and grills each skewer to order, with a focus on classic cuts and bold, well-balanced sauces. The menu is extensive, with rare cuts like chicken heart and gizzard, plus delicious sides like edamame with garlic and pickled vegetables. Prices are reasonable, and the friendly service makes it a go-to for locals looking for no-fuss, high-quality yakitori. 5. **Roji** A sleek, modern izakaya in Wan Chai, Roji offers a contemporary take on yakitori with a focus on seasonal ingredients. The chicken is sourced from Australian free-range farms, and the skewers are grilled over applewood for a subtle, fruity smoke. Creative options like the chicken skewer with miso glaze and pickled plum, or the chicken skin with truffle salt, are highlights, and the menu also includes excellent sashimi and rice bowls. The stylish space and well-crafted cocktail list make it a great spot for a date or casual dinner with friends. Note: Availability and menus can change, so it’s best to check each restaurant’s website or social media for the latest updates and to make reservations, especially for popular spots like Yardbird and Torishiki.
