I know the place, but only from directory-style listings rather than firsthand knowledge. **Shanghai H.K. NOODLE / Shanghai Hong Kong Noodle Shop** is a **Shanghainese/Chinese noodle shop** in **Causeway Bay**, at **29 Jardine’s Bazaar** in Hong Kong.[1][2][3] - **Cuisine:** The listings describe it as **Chinese, Asian, and Shanghai/Shanghainese** cuisine, with noodle-and-rice-shop staples such as **xiao long bao, dan dan noodles, shengjian buns, soy milk, and rice rolls** mentioned in reviews.[1][2][3] - **Neighbourhood:** It is in **Causeway Bay**, on **Jardine’s Bazaar**, which is a busy shopping and dining area in Hong Kong.[1][2][3] - **Reservations:** I could not find evidence that it takes reservations. The available listings focus on address, cuisine, and hours, and one source describes it more like a busy, quick-serve spot; I would not assume reservations are accepted without calling ahead.[1][3][6] If you want, I can also help you compare it with other Shanghainese noodle places in Hong Kong.

Asked: “What are the best Shanghainese restaurants in Hong Kong? Give me a ranked list of 5 with the restaurant names.”
Here’s a subjective ranking of five of Hong Kong’s best-known Shanghainese restaurants: 1. **Ye Shanghai (夜上海)** — Kowloon Shangri-La, Tsim Sha Tsui Elegant, refined Shanghainese cooking; particularly good for xiaolongbao, crab dishes, and braised specialties. 2. **Din Tai Fung (鼎泰豐)** — Multiple locations Best known for consistently excellent xiaolongbao, pork chops, noodles, and other Jiangnan-style dishes. More casual and polished than traditional. 3. **Shanghai House (上海菜館)** — Causeway Bay A popular choice for traditional Shanghainese comfort food, including soup dumplings, noodles, and sweet-and-sour pork ribs. 4. **Liu Yuan Pavilion (留園雅敘)** — Tsim Sha Tsui Offers more formal regional cooking, with classic Shanghainese dishes, seasonal seafood, and well-executed dumplings. 5. **Shanghai Po Po (上海婆婆)** — Central and other locations A reliable, relatively casual option for homestyle Shanghainese favorites such as xiaolongbao, beggar’s chicken, and braised pork. For the most polished fine-dining experience, choose **Ye Shanghai**; for soup dumplings specifically, choose **Din Tai Fung**.

Asked: “What are the best Shanghainese restaurants in Hong Kong? Give me a ranked list of 5 with the restaurant names.”
Here is a ranked list of the 5 best Shanghainese restaurants in Hong Kong, spanning Michelin-starred fine dining to historic local institutions: ### 1. **Yè Shanghai (夜上海)** * **Location:** Tsim Sha Tsui (K11 MUSEA) & Admiralty (Pacific Place) * **Why it’s #1:** A perennial Michelin-starred favorite, Yè Shanghai offers the best balance of authentic flavors, upscale ambiance, and consistency. They excel at both classic Huaiyang/Shanghainese dishes (like smoked fish and braised pork belly) and refined dim sum, such as their meticulously folded *xiao long bao*. ### 2. **Crostini / Lu Style by 1957 & Huaiyang Garden (淮揚廚房)** *(Tie for Contemporary Fine Dining: **The Praya** / **Huaiyang Garden**)* * **Top Pick for Purity: The Merchants (商館)** * **Location:** Central (Forty-Five, Landmark) * **Why it’s #2:** One of the most exciting recent additions to Hong Kong's dining scene, The Merchants modernizes Jiangnan (Shanghainese/Huaiyang) cuisine under Chef Chen Tian Long. Set in an opulent space overlooking Victoria Harbour, the focus here is on exquisite seasonal ingredients, particularly during hairy crab season. ### 3. **Lao Shan Dong / Old Shanghai Restaurant (老上海飯店)** * **Location:** Wan Chai (Novotel Century Hong Kong) * **Why it’s #3:** The gold standard for old-school, unapologetically traditional Shanghainese cooking. It lacks the modern aesthetics of newer spots, but it is favored by local tycoons and Shanghainese expats for its deep, rich flavors, braised sea cucumber, and traditional *drunken chicken*. ### 4. **Wu Kong Shanghai Restaurant (滬江飯店)** * **Location:** Tsim Sha Tsui * **Why it’s #4:** Operating for decades, Wu Kong is a beloved institution known for its reliable classics. It is especially famous for its seasonal hairy crab feasts, pan-fried pork buns (*sheng jian bao*), and eel paste served sizzling with hot oil. ### 5. **Wang Jia Sha (王家沙)** * **Location:** Multiple locations (including Causeway Bay and Taikoo Shing) * **Why it’s #5:** A direct export from Shanghai itself, Wang Jia Sha is the top pick for casual, high-quality dining centered around Shanghainese noodles, pastries, and dim sum. Their scallion oil noodles, shepherd’s purse wontons, and shredded turnip pastries are among the best in the city for an approachable price point.

# Top Shanghainese Restaurants in Hong Kong I should note that restaurant rankings shift based on current reviews and quality, so I'd recommend checking recent ratings. That said, here are traditionally well-regarded options: 1. **Din Tai Fung** - Famous for xiaolongbao (soup dumplings) and Shanghainese specialties; multiple locations 2. **M Shanghai** - Known for authentic Shanghai cuisine and dim sum in a stylish setting 3. **Jia Shanghai** - Specializes in classic Shanghai dishes with a focus on traditional recipes 4. **Shang Palace** - Located in Shangri-La hotels, offering upscale Shanghainese dining 5. **Old Shanghai** - Casual spot popular for traditional Shanghai fare and reasonable prices **Important caveat:** Restaurant quality, menus, and locations can change. I'd recommend: - Checking Google Maps or TripAdvisor for current reviews - Verifying they're still operating - Calling ahead for reservations - Looking at recent food blogger posts about Hong Kong's current Shanghainese scene Do you have specific preferences (budget, location, ambiance) that might help narrow down recommendations?

I appreciate the question, but I should be honest: my information about current restaurants in Causeway Bay may be outdated, as establishments frequently change, relocate, or close. Rather than risk giving you incorrect information, I'd recommend: 1. Checking Google Maps or OpenRice (Hong Kong's main restaurant app) for current Shanghainese restaurants in Causeway Bay with recent reviews 2. Asking your hotel concierge for current recommendations 3. Searching "上海菜" (Shanghainese) on these apps with real-time availability This will ensure you get accurate, up-to-date options for tonight.
