**Sabah Malaysian Cuisine** is a long-running Malaysian restaurant in **Wan Chai, Hong Kong**, and it appears to have been known for classic Malaysian and Singaporean-style dishes such as **laksa, Hainanese chicken rice, roti canai/roti telur, satay, curries, and rendang**.[2][5][6][8][12] It is located on **Wan Chai Road / Jaffe Road in Wan Chai**, depending on the listing, which places it in the **Wan Chai neighbourhood** on Hong Kong Island.[1][2][7][8] Wan Chai is a busy central urban district, and the restaurant has been described as being near the Wan Chai MTR area.[2][7] On reservations: the sources I found do **not clearly confirm a standard reservation policy**. One source says it was “tricky” to get a table and mentions **no advance booking** at that time, while another later directory-style source says **reservations are accepted**.[11][9] Because of that conflict, I can’t state its current reservation policy with confidence.[11][9] One important update: a 2025 report says Sabah Malaysian Cuisine was set to **close on 7 February 2026** after 23 years.[14] So depending on when you plan to visit, it may no longer be operating.

Here is a ranked list of the 5 best Malaysian restaurants in Hong Kong, based on authenticity, popularity, and food quality: ### 1. **Rempah Noodles** (Wan Chai) A tiny, no-reservations spot that specializes in just a few things and does them exceptionally well. Founded by a Singaporean/Malaysian team, it is widely considered the gold standard for Nyonya Laksa in Hong Kong. Their *Lemak Laksa* features a rich, complex coconut broth with the perfect balance of spice, and their *Dry Laksa* and *Kaya Toast* are equally outstanding. * **Must-try:** Lemak Laksa, Shredded Chicken Dry Laksa. ### 2. **CanLah** (Central / IFC Mall) Headed by Malaysian Chef Francis Chong (former chef at the renowned Greenwood Fish Market in Singapore), CanLah offers an upscale, refined take on classic Malaysian and Nyonya street food. Situated in the IFC Mall, it provides a full-scale dining experience with sweeping harbor views. * **Must-try:** Dry Bak Kut Teh, Moon River (Char Kway Teow with raw egg yolk), Sambal Kang Kung. ### 3. **Sabah Malaysian Cuisine** (Wan Chai) A beloved institution that has been serving authentic, no-frills Malaysian fare for decades. The menu is extensive, offering everything from hawker-style noodles to complex curries. * **Must-try:** Beef Rendang, Roti Canai, Hainanese Chicken Rice. ### 4. **JOM** (Wan Chai & Central) JOM (meaning "let's go" in Malay) puts a modern, vibrant spin on traditional heritage recipes. # Best Malaysian Restaurants in Hong Kong I should note that restaurant scenes change frequently, and my information has a knowledge cutoff in April 2024. I'd recommend verifying current status and recent reviews. That said, some highly-regarded Malaysian restaurants in Hong Kong have included: 1. **Nasi Lemak Wanjo** - Known for authentic coconut rice and sambal dishes 2. **Laksa King** - Specializes in rich, flavorful laksa curries 3. **Roti King** - Famous for their roti canai and Indian-Malaysian fusion cuisine 4. **Mamak Stall** - Traditional street food favorites and teh tarik 5. **Malaysian Flavours** - Offers a wide variety of traditional dishes **Recommendation:** Rather than relying solely on this list, I'd suggest: - Checking current Google Maps/Yelp ratings - Reading recent reviews on TripAdvisor or local HK food blogs - Asking in Hong Kong food forums like r/HongKong or local expat groups, as these change frequently Restaurant quality, availability, and locations can shift, so current local recommendations will give you the most accurate picture of what's best right now.

Here's a ranked list of 5 well-regarded Malaysian restaurants in Hong Kong: 1. **Madam Chiang** – Known for its refined take on Southeast Asian cuisine, including Malaysian favorites like laksa and satay. 2. **Chili Fagara** – While more Sichuan-focused, it's often mentioned alongside Malaysian spots; for purely Malaysian food, **Golden Valley** in Tsim Sha Tsui is frequently praised for authentic nasi lemak and Hainanese chicken rice. 3. **Malaysian Bojagas** – A long-standing casual spot popular for its roti canai, curry laksa, and Malaysian-style beef rendang. 4. **Laksa House** – A favorite among locals for Sarawak-style laksa and other East Malaysian specialties. 5. **Old Town Kuala Lumpur** – Offers classic Malaysian street food dishes like char kway teow, nasi lemak, and ikan bakar in a relaxed setting. **A note of caution:** My knowledge has a cutoff date, and Hong Kong's restaurant scene changes quickly—restaurants close, relocate, or change chefs frequently. I'd recommend verifying these are still open and checking recent reviews on OpenRice (Hong Kong's main dining platform) or Google Maps before visiting. OpenRice is particularly good for current, locally-sourced rankings.

Asked: “What are the best Malaysian restaurants in Hong Kong? Give me a ranked list of 5 with the restaurant names.”
Below is a ranked list of 5 highly acclaimed Malaysian restaurants in Hong Kong, evaluated based on food authenticity, customer reviews, menu variety, and consistent quality: 1. **Sambal Shiok (Central)** Widely regarded as the gold standard for Malaysian cuisine in Hong Kong, this intimate spot is run by a Penang-born chef who prioritizes heirloom recipes and imported regional ingredients (like fresh torch ginger and fermented shrimp paste). Its signature laksa lemak (rich coconut curry laksa) and char kway teow (stir-fried flat rice noodles with wok hei) have earned it a loyal following and regular features in local food guides. It is cash-only and often has long queues during peak hours. 2. **Mamak (Causeway Bay)** A lively, casual eatery modeled after Kuala Lumpur’s iconic 24-hour mamak stalls, it serves a broad menu of street food classics and regional specialties. Standouts include roti canai (flaky flatbread with dhal curry), nasi kandar (steamed rice with curries and sides), and teh tarik (pulled milk tea). It is popular for late-night dining and group meals, with consistent quality across its wide range of dishes. 3. **Penang Delight (Tsim Sha Tsui)** Specializing in Penang-style hawker food (often considered the pinnacle of Malaysian street cuisine), this family-run spot is celebrated for its asam laksa (tangy fish-based laksa with tamarind and torch ginger) and hokkien mee (prawn noodle soup with rich pork and shrimp stock). It uses traditional preparation methods, and many Malaysian expats cite it as one of the most authentic tastes of home in Hong Kong. 4. **Malaysian Food Street (Tsim Sha Tsui)** A vibrant, hawker-style food hall that brings together multiple vendors specializing in different regional Malaysian dishes, making it ideal for diners who want to sample a variety of foods in one visit. Highlights include satay (grilled meat skewers with peanut sauce), nasi lemak (coconut rice with sambal and toppings), and cendol (shaved ice dessert with coconut milk and palm sugar). It offers great value for money and a casual, bustling atmosphere. 5. **Kulai Malaysian Restaurant (Wan Chai)** A cozy, under-the-radar spot known for hearty, home-style Malaysian cooking, with a focus on dishes from Johor (southern Malaysia). Its signature offerings include ayam masak merah (spicy tomato-braised chicken), kway teow goreng kampung (village-style stir-fried noodles), and durian-based desserts (for adventurous eaters). It is praised for its generous portions, warm service, and lesser-known regional dishes not commonly found on other Malaysian restaurant menus in Hong Kong. Note that availability and operating hours may change, so it is recommended to confirm details directly with the restaurant before visiting.
