I don’t know a restaurant called **Kam Sha Kok Cafe** well enough to describe it confidently, and the search results I found are mostly for a different place, **Kam Wah Cafe** in Mong Kok, not Kam Sha Kok. The one clearly identified result for **Kam Sha Kok** says it is a **Hong Kong-style dai pai dong** in **Sha Tin**, at **G/F, Pok Hong Estate Cooked Food Stall, Sha Tin**, near **Sha Tin Wai MTR Station**.[2] Based on that listing, its cuisine is **Hong Kong-style cooked food / dai pai dong fare** rather than a specific specialty cuisine.[2] The neighbourhood is **Pok Hong Estate in Sha Tin**.[2] The result does **not clearly state whether it takes reservations**, and I did not find a reliable source in the results confirming reservations either way.[2] If you meant **Kam Wah Cafe** instead, that is a well-known **cha chaan teng** in **Mong Kok** famous for pineapple buns and milk tea.[8][18]
Here’s a ranked list of five iconic **Hong Kong-style cafés (cha chaan tengs)** in Hong Kong: 1. **Australia Dairy Company** — Jordan Famous for scrambled eggs, toast, macaroni soup, and fast-paced old-school service. 2. **Kam Fung Restaurant** — Wan Chai Best known for its flaky **bo lo bao** (pineapple bun) and traditional milk tea. 3. **Lan Fong Yuen** — Central A legendary spot for **silk-stocking milk tea**, pork chop buns, and instant-noodle dishes. 4. **Tsui Wah Restaurant** — Multiple locations A more polished and accessible cha chaan teng chain, especially known for curry fish balls, crispy bun with condensed milk, and milk tea. 5. **Sing Heung Yuen** — Central A casual open-air favorite for tomato beef noodles, macaroni soup, and classic Hong Kong comfort food. These restaurants vary from highly traditional and hurried to more comfortable and tourist-friendly, but together they represent the classic Hong Kong dining experience.
Tsui Wah Restaurant Tai Hing Café de Coral Fairwood Maxim’s Café
1. **The Chairman (Central)** — Refined, ingredient-driven Cantonese cooking in an intimate setting, ideal for a memorable group dinner. 2. **Duddell’s (Central)** — Elegant modern Cantonese cuisine paired with an art-filled atmosphere and excellent cocktails. 3. **Fook Lam Moon (Wan Chai)** — A legendary choice for luxurious Cantonese classics, especially seafood and roast meats. 4. **Spring Moon at The Peninsula (Tsim Sha Tsui)** — Old-school Hong Kong glamour, polished service, and beautifully executed dim sum and Cantonese dishes. 5. **Luk Yu Tea House (Central)** — A historic, atmospheric restaurant for traditional Cantonese food and a distinctly nostalgic Hong Kong experience.
When it comes to authentic "Hong Kong-style" dining, the experience is best defined by **Cha Chaan Tengs** (tea restaurants) and traditional **Bing Sutts** (ice rooms)—famous for milk tea, pineapple buns, French toast, and macaroni soup. Here are the top 5 Hong Kong-style restaurants in Hong Kong, ranked: ### **1. Australia Dairy Company (澳洲牛奶公司)** * **Location:** Jordan, Kowloon * **Signature Dishes:** Scrambled eggs on thick toast, steamed milk pudding, macaroni soup with ham. * **Why it’s #1:** It is the quintessential, unapologetic Hong Kong dining experience. Famous for its lightning-fast service and notoriously brash (yet efficient) staff, it serves what are universally considered the fluffiest, richest scrambled eggs in the city. Expect a queue, but it moves fast. ### **2. Kam Wah Cafe (金華冰廳)** * **Location:** Prince Edward, Kowloon * **Signature Dishes:** *Polo Bao* (Pineapple Bun with a slab of cold butter), egg tarts, traditional HK milk tea. * **Why it’s #2:** Widely crowned the "King of Pineapple Buns." The buns here are served fresh out of the oven every 10–15 minutes, featuring a piping hot, perfectly crumbly, sugary crust balanced by melting, salty butter. Their flaky-crust egg tarts are equally legendary. ### **3. Mido Cafe (美都餐室)** * **Location:** Yau Ma Tei, Kowloon * **Signature Dishes:** Baked pork chop rice, fried thick noodles with beef, red bean ice. * **Why it’s #3:** Operating since 1950, Mido Cafe feels like stepping into a Wong Kar-wai movie. It retains its original 1950s two-story retro decor with mosaic-tiled walls and green window frames. While the food is classic comfort fare, the preserved mid-century atmosphere is unmatched. ### **4. Lan Fong Yuen (蘭芳園)** * **Location:** Central (original open-air stall) & Tsim Sha Tsui * **Signature Dishes:** Silk-stocking milk tea, Hong Kong-style French toast, chicken chop with instant noodles. * **Why it’s #4:** Established in 1952, this is the birthplace of the famous "silk-stocking" milk tea (poured through a fine cloth filter resembling a pantyhose to make it ultra-smooth). Paired with their kaya-filled, deep-fried French toast topped with a melting pat of butter and syrup, it is an essential breakfast stop. ### **5. Swiss Cafe (瑞士咖啡室)** * **Location:** Wan Chai (and other branches) * **Signature Dishes:** "Swiss" chicken wings, Swiss sauce fried noodles, scrambled egg sandwiches. * **Why it’s #5:** Famous for its Hong Kong-style "Swiss sauce" (a sweet, savory, and aromatic soy sauce marinade that has nothing to do with Switzerland). Their slow-cooked Swiss chicken wings and saucy fried beef noodles represent the unique Western-Chinese fusion that defines modern Cha Chaan Teng culture.
