Below is a ranked list of 5 standout restaurants, evaluated on food quality, consistency, service, and overall experience: 1. **Sushi Saito (Hong Kong)** The only 3-Michelin-starred Japanese restaurant in Hong Kong, this is the international outpost of Tokyo’s legendary sushi temple run by chef Takashi Saito. Helmed by head chef Kei Kojima (a long-time protégé of Saito), it serves edomae-style omakase featuring daily air-flown seasonal fish from Tokyo’s Toyosu Market. The 20+ course menu highlights precise rice seasoning (adjusted for fish type and temperature) and perfectly aged fish, with signature bites like uni from Hokkaido and buttery otoro. With only 12 counter seats, reservations book out months in advance, and the intimate, personalized service makes it a once-in-a-lifetime dining experience. 2. **Den Hong Kong** The 2-Michelin-starred outpost of Tokyo’s iconic kaiseki restaurant (ranked 3rd on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2024) brings chef Zaiyu Hasegawa’s playful, modern take on traditional kaiseki to Hong Kong. The menu balances reverence for seasonal Japanese ingredients with witty, global twists—signature dishes include the famous "Dentucky Fried Chicken" (a juicy chicken thigh wrapped in crispy nori, served with yuzu tartar sauce) and a whimsical dessert shaped like a potted plant. The 10-seat counter and warm, approachable service create a lively atmosphere far less formal than typical high-end kaiseki spots. 3. **Sushi Masataka** A 2-Michelin-starred edomae sushi omakase spot led by chef Masataka Ogasawara, who honed his craft at Tokyo’s renowned Sushi Yoshitake. The restaurant is celebrated for its hyper-seasonal, ingredient-driven menu, with rare finds like wild anago (conger eel) from Kyushu and white shrimp from Toyama Bay. Chef Ogasawara’s signature is his perfectly vinegared akazu (red vinegar) rice, which pairs seamlessly with each piece of fish. The 14-seat counter has a cozy, neighborhood feel, and the chef’s friendly explanations of each dish make it accessible even for first-time omakase diners. 4. **Yardbird Hong Kong** A iconic casual izakaya in Sheung Wan, consistently ranked on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants, and a favorite among locals and visitors alike. Helmed by chef Matt Abergel, it specializes in yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) made with free-range local chicken, cooked over binchotan charcoal for a smoky, juicy finish. Must-order dishes include the crispy chicken skin skewer, tsukune (chicken meatball) with raw egg yolk dip, and the famous katsu sando (crispy pork cutlet sandwich with tangy sauce). The lively, loud atmosphere and extensive selection of Japanese craft sakes and shochus make it perfect for group dinners. 5. **Kaiseki Ryori Kikunoi Honten Hong Kong** The 2-Michelin-starred outpost of Kyoto’s 3-Michelin-starred kaiseki institution, led by chef Yoshihiro Murata, a pioneer of modern Kyoto-style kaiseki. Each multi-course menu follows the Japanese calendar, with dishes like spring cherry blossom mochi, summer chilled tofu with uni, and autumn matsutake mushroom soup. The serene, minimalist dining room (with private tatami rooms available) and attentive, unobtrusive service make it ideal for special occasions and quiet, refined meals.

The food overall is fresh, tasty and proper Japanese. The boss is fluent in Cantonese, Japanese and English, which is also very talkative and friendly. There are separate menus for lunch and dinner which means there are plenty of options for everyone.
